In January 2004, by opting for Tein Telecom, the Flemish Community launch its boats control and identification project through the new AIS technology imposed worldwide by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

This system allows the information exchange, such as the identification, the position and the speed, between boats and towards the coast via the existing radio VHF communications.

It highly increases the degree of knowledge of the controlled area and, therefore, increases the security by allowing a better maritime traffic management.
The system depends on the technology of the Austrian supplier Frequentis and consists in the collection and the transmission of data extracted from radio VHF communications.

Data are then distributed via a computer network to the different Schelde control centers.
