In December 2005, the local Police of Vilvoorde-Machelen awards Tein Telecom the implementation of a new mobile camera network in view of the remote surveillance of half a dozen spots in the area's of Vilvoorde, Machelen, Diegem, and Houtem.

All the camera's are connected to the central dispatching via a wireless infrastructure based on point-to-multipoint links.
The radio equipment used for this project is based on the Proxim product range ; it delivers a throughput of up to 24 Mbit/s per link, which guarantees sufficiant bandwidth for the transport of several camera's per link. The images captured by the camera's are digitized, encoded and forwarded to the Ethernet network by VisioWave equipment.
"Legend" dome-camera's from Kalatel are used for this project; they are fitted with a 26x optical zoom; each camera can be set with 24 private zones in view of guaranteeing privacy when zooming into private buildings and appartments.
All the camera's are integrated in a vandal-proof housing; they are installed on dedicated masts.
The operator is granted access to the camera network through the SIMBA software, which puts the control of each camera to his fingertips. In addition to his primary role of GUI, Simba can automate the launch of a number of applications via script generation (detection of call from phone post, SMS generation, pop-up screan, e-mail, alarm generation, etc).
Simba can also be empowered with a large array of plug-ins for specific image processing, such as car plate recognition, person identification, aggressive behaviour detection, automated parking surveillance, peripheral surveillance, traffic control)
All these applications increase drastically the intelligence and the autonomy of the system, which is highly appreciated by Security personnel when they operate at reduced manpower.
All the images captured by the camera's are archived on dedicated chassis for post-event image analysis. These chassis are fitted with dual power supply and RAID hard disks in view of increasing the overall reliability of the system.
Simba speeds-up queries and replay through its user-friendly interface.
The network was designed in view of the mobility of the camera's, which was one major requirements of the Administration.
According to the evaluation report established by the Police, one important decision criteria in favour of Tein Telecom is the ability to provide a flexible and very intuitive graphical interface for the operators. The network design based on the latest technologies influenced also positively the decision.
